Laser Surgery
The use of surgical lasers is a rapidly growing field in veterinary and human medicine. The word laser is an acronym for light amplification with s
timulated emission radiation. Different wavelengths of laser light are generated by stimulating various mediums. For instance, the wavelength of light from a CO2 laser is generated from the
stimulation of CO2 gas. Each wavelength of light reacts in tissue differently. For this reason we currently have two types of lasers. The CO2
laser is used mainly to kill bacteria in wounds, remove skin tumors, and prepare graft site for skin grafts. The diode laser has the ability to transmit its laser energy through a
small fiber. This allows us to perform many endoscopic procedures. One procedure we are currently developing is the use of the diode laser to facilitate the fusion of the
lower hock joints. With success, we will be able to return horses to work faster and with less pain in the postoperative period.
Orthopedics
As horses become more valuable to our clients, both monetarily and sentimentally, we
are faced with the task of developing techniques to save horses from what could be a catastrophic injury, such as, broken bones. Industry has responded to the needs of
equine surgeons by inventing and producing stronger orthopedic devices and implants more suitable for the equine patients. In order to decrease post operative pain and
complications, less invasive surgical techniques have been developed. A prime example is arthroscopic surgery. This technique allows the surgeon to work inside a
joint through small incisions with minimal pain or cosmetic defect. The use of fluoroscopy during orthopedic procedures improves our ability to perform select
procedures without large incisions.

Shockwave Therapy
EMA strives to bring new treatments into use.
One of our new treatments is shock wave therapy.
Shock wave therapy uses concentrated bursts of focused energy to promote healing and decrease pain associated
with tendon, ligament, muscle and bone injuries.
|
Abdominal Surgery
|

|
The number one reason for abdominal surgery in horses is colic. A catchall term for abdominal pain,
colic constitutes a true equine emergency. While there are many different causes of colic, recent advances in surgical instruments, techniques and post operative
care have increased the survival rate of colic surgery to near 80%. EMA offers 24 hours a day emergency surgical service, giving our clients peace of mind that help is available should a crisis arise.

Equine Dentistry
|

|
Equine Dentistry has gained prominence recently as one of the veterinarians most important tools in
maintaining equine health.
EMA offers prophylactic and corrective pneumatic dentistry procedures through both field and hospital services. A small investment now can make a lifetime of difference to your horse.
|
Neonatal Foal Care
|

|
EMA is fully equipped and staffed to provide neonatal foal care services.
Foals are fragile early in life and unfortunately, many things can go wrong.
EMA is ready and willing to take on the sometimes monumental task of caring for critically ill foals.
